Airway Assessment: How do You Know it’s Safe to Sedate?

Airway assessment is one of the most important assessments prior to sedation. But there are so many factors affecting airway, that one simple test is not enough to guarantee safety.

At SedateUK we talk about the mnemonic LEMON, a simple way of remembering all the aspects that affect the airway.

In the poster below we discuss each of these aspects:

  • Look Externally at the patient’s anatomy
  • Evaluate 3-3-2 finger widths between incisors, hyoid and mentum, and hyoid and thyroid
  • Mallampati score
  • Obstruction
  • Neck Mobility
